Turistic Editorial · 04.07.2026
EC1 is Łódź's biggest 21st-century investment — a 250 million PLN transformation of a 1907 power plant into Poland's largest science and technology centre. Opened 2018. ## The power plant The Łódzka Elektrownia Miejska (EC1) was built in 1907 as one of the first power plants in the Russian Empire. Provided electricity to Łódź factories and residents. Iconic red-brick industrial architecture, huge turbine hall. Operated until 2000. The Brown Boveri turbine of 1935 (5 metres tall, weighing 60 tonnes) is preserved as the centrepiece of the "Processing Energy" exhibition — the only such preserved unit in the world. ## Three exhibition zones **1. Processing Energy** History of electricity, original turbine, nuclear power plant simulator, experiments with current, electromagnetism, static electricity. **2. Development of Knowledge and Civilisation** From ancient discoveries to quantum computers. Interactive robots, algorithm programming, DNA hologram. **3. Micro- and Macroworld** From quanta to galaxies. Astronaut simulator (centrifugal wheel), rooms illustrating physical phenomena. ## Planetarium EC1 Poland's largest planetarium — 18 m dome with 8K projector. 6 daily shows: "Journey to galaxies", "History of the universe", "Children's programme" (age 5+). Ticket 25-40 PLN. ## IMAX 3D Cinema Nature and science films on a 15-metre screen. Special screenings of NASA and BBC productions. ## Practical - Location: Targowa 1/3, next to Łódź Fabryczna railway station (2 min walk) - Ticket: 45 PLN adult, 30 PLN child, family (2+2) 130 PLN, 2-day pass 200 PLN - Hours: Tuesday-Sunday 9-19 (last entry 17) - Time needed: 4-5 hours minimum for one zone, all day for full experience - Online booking recommended, especially weekends The building itself is worth a visit — one of Europe's most successful post-industrial revitalisation projects, alongside Manufaktura and Księży Młyn.
